The spelling <strong>cocoanut</strong> is an archaic form of the word.<sup id="cite_ref-COD_2-0">[3]</sup> The term is derived from 16th century Portuguese and Spanish <em>cocos</em>, meaning &#8220;grinning face&#8221;, from the three small holes on the coconut shell that resemble human facial features.</p>
